Description

Artesunate 30mg Injection is an antimalarial medication used primarily for the treatment of severe malaria caused by *Plasmodium falciparum*. It belongs to the artemisinin class of drugs, which are derived from the herb *Artemisia annua*.

The drug acts by rapidly reducing the number of malaria parasites in the blood through a mechanism that involves the generation of reactive oxygen species that damage the parasite proteins and membranes.

It is generally administered by intravenous or intramuscular injection, making it suitable for severe cases where oral medication is not feasible.

The usual dosage involves a loading dose followed by maintenance doses, typically:
– Initial dose of 2.4 mg/kg body weight given intravenously or intramuscularly at 0 hours,
– Followed by 2.4 mg/kg at 12 hours and 24 hours after the initial dose,
– Then continued once daily until the patient can switch to oral antimalarial therapy.

Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, mild allergic reactions, and rare blood disorders such as hemolytic anemia.

The medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to artesunate or related compounds.

Artesunate 30mg Injection should be stored below 30°C and protected from light. The reconstituted solution should be used immediately and not stored.

Use should be under medical supervision with proper monitoring and follow-up, especially for potential side effects like delayed hemolysis.
