Description
Atrovent Inhaler contains ipratropium bromide, which is a bronchodilator medication.
It is used primarily to prevent and treat symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma by helping to open the airways in the lungs.
Atrovent belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergics or muscarinic antagonists. It works by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that causes tightening of the muscles around the airways, leading to relaxation and widening of the bronchial tubes.
The inhaler form delivers the medication directly into the lungs through inhalation for rapid relief.
Typical dosing involves inhaling a specified number of puffs (usually 2 puffs) up to four times daily, as directed by a healthcare provider.
Common side effects may include dry mouth, cough, throat irritation, and occasionally headache or dizziness.
Contraindications include hypersensitivity to ipratropium or atropine derivatives.
Care should be taken in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or bladder obstruction, and the medication should be used under medical supervision.
The inhaler should be stored at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.
