Augmentin combines amoxicillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic, with clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. This combination helps overcome bacterial resistance by preventing bacterial enzymes from breaking down amoxicillin.
The medication works by interfering with the formation of bacterial cell walls, causing bacteria to die.
