It is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and sinusitis.
Augmentin belongs to the class of antibiotics called beta-lactams, specifically a combination of a penicillin-type antibiotic (amoxicillin) and a beta-lactamase inhibitor (clavulanic acid). This combination enhances the effectiveness against bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes, which usually make them resistant to amoxicillin alone.
The medication works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to the death of bacteria.
Augmentin Susp is available in liquid form, commonly as a powder to be reconstituted with water before use.
Dosage is determined based on the patient’s age, weight, and type of infection, often given two to three times daily as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and allergic reactions. Severe allergic reactions can occur in penicillin-sensitive individuals.
Contraindications include known allergy to penicillins or beta-lactam antibiotics and caution is advised in patients with liver impairment.
Store the suspension in a refrigerator after reconstitution and use within the recommended period, typically 7 to 10 days, to ensure effectiveness.
