Description
Betoptic 0.5% is an ophthalmic medication containing betaxolol hydrochloride.
Drug Class: Selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker (beta-blocker).
Primary Medical Uses: Used primarily to lower intraocular pressure in conditions such as open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
Mechanism of Action: Betaxolol selectively blocks beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the eye, which reduces the production of aqueous humor (fluid in the eye), thereby lowering intraocular pressure and helping to prevent damage to the optic nerve.
Common Forms: Ophthalmic solution (eye drops) with a concentration of 0.5%.
Dosage Instructions: Typically, one drop of Betoptic 0.5% is instilled into the affected eye(s) once or twice daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
Side Effects: Possible side effects include eye irritation, burning or stinging upon instillation, blurred vision, dry eyes, headache, and in rare cases, systemic effects such as bradycardia or bronchospasm.
Contraindications and Precautions: Should not be used by patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sinus bradycardia, heart block, or heart failure. Use caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders. Avoid contact with the tip of the dropper to prevent contamination.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light.
Betoptic 0.5% eye drops are used under medical supervision to manage elevated intraocular pressure and protect against glaucoma-related vision loss.
