Description
Blusopt Eye Drop is a combination ophthalmic solution containing dorzolamide and timolol. It is primarily used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in conditions such as glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Drug Class: Combination of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (dorzolamide) and a beta-adrenergic blocker (timolol).
Mechanism of Action: Dorzolamide decreases the production of aqueous humor in the eye by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which reduces fluid formation. Timolol, a beta-blocker, also decreases aqueous humor production. The combined effect helps lower intraocular pressure, reducing the risk of damage to the optic nerve.
Common Forms: Ophthalmic solution, typically available in small dropper bottles.
Dosage Instructions: Usually, one drop is applied to the affected eye(s) twice daily, or as directed by an ophthalmologist. The bottle should be tilted, and care should be taken to avoid contact of the dropper tip with the eye or surrounding surfaces to prevent contamination.
Side Effects: Possible side effects include eye burning or stinging upon application, blurred vision, eye dryness, redness, irritation, headache, or a bitter taste. Systemic effects such as slow heart rate, breathing difficulties, or fatigue may occur but are less common.
Contraindications and Precautions: Not recommended for individuals with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, certain heart conditions, or allergy to either component. Use caution in patients with kidney or liver problems. Avoid use if pregnant or breastfeeding unless clearly necessary and under medical supervision.
Store the product at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, and keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
