Cefotaxime 1g injection (generic) is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, abdominal infections, septicemia, meningitis, and bone and joint infections.
Cefotaxime works by disrupting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, causing bacteria to die. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
The drug is administered via intravenous or intramuscular injection.
Typical adult dosages range from 1g to 2g every 6 to 8 hours, depending on the type and severity of the infection. The duration of treatment varies based on the clinical condition and response.
Common side effects may include pain or irritation at the injection site, diarrhea, rash, allergic reactions, and occasional alterations in liver enzymes or blood cell counts.
Cefotaxime is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefotaxime, other cephalosporins, or penicillins. Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment.
Medical supervision is important during therapy to ensure effectiveness and monitor for adverse effects.
