Cetirizine Syrup (Cetibed) contains cetirizine hydrochloride, a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and itching from conditions like hay fever, urticaria (hives), and other allergic reactions.
Cetirizine works by blocking histamine receptors in the body, reducing the effects of histamine which causes allergic symptoms.
The syrup is typically taken orally, making it suitable for children or individuals who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Dosage depends on age:
– Adults and children over 12 years: 10 mg once daily.
– Children 6 to 12 years: 5 mg twice daily.
– Children 2 to 6 years: 2.5 mg twice daily.
Common side effects may include drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, and fatigue. Cetirizine generally causes less sedation than older antihistamines.
It should be used cautiously in patients with kidney impairment and is contraindicated in those allergic to cetirizine or related substances. Combining with alcohol or sedatives may increase drowsiness.
