Ciprolex Eye Ointment 5GM contains ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone class. It is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye such as conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, and other superficial eye infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Ciprofloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair, leading to the death of the bacteria.
The ointment is applied topically inside the lower eyelid, usually 2 to 3 times daily or as directed by a healthcare professional. The amount and frequency depend on the severity of the infection.
Common side effects may include mild eye irritation, burning, redness, or itching at the site of application. It is contraindicated in individuals allergic to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
Care should be taken to avoid contamination of the ointment tube tip and to avoid contact lenses during treatment unless directed otherwise by a doctor.
