Clarithromycin Susp 125 mg/5 ml is an oral antibiotic suspension used mainly for treating bacterial infections in children or individuals who have difficulty swallowing tablets. It belongs to the macrolide class of antibiotics.
This medication is commonly prescribed for respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, as well as certain skin infections and Helicobacter pylori infection as part of combination therapy.
The suspension works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby preventing bacterial growth and multiplication.
The usual dosage for children is based on their weight and the severity of infection, often around 7.5 mg to 15 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, divided into two doses. The suspension should be shaken well before use and administered with a measuring device to ensure accurate dosing. Duration of treatment typically ranges from 7 to 14 days, as directed by a healthcare provider.
Common side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Allergic reactions or taste disturbances are less common.
