Latanoprost Eye Drop (Exeter) contains latanoprost as its active ingredient.
Primary Medical Uses:
– Used to treat elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
– Helps prevent damage to the optic nerve and reduces the risk of vision loss.
Drug Class or Type:
– Prostaglandin analogue.
General Mechanism of Action:
– Latanoprost increases the outflow of aqueous humor through the uveoscleral pathway.
– This lowers intraocular pressure by enhancing fluid drainage from the eye.
Common Forms:
– Ophthalmic solution (eye drops).
Dosage Instructions:
– Usually administered as one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening.
– Consistent use at the same time each day is important.
– Avoid contact of the dropper tip with the eye or any surface to prevent contamination.
– Remove contact lenses before applying the drop and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
Side Effects, Contraindications, or Interactions:
– Common side effects include eye redness, irritation, dryness, blurred vision, and sometimes increased brown pigmentation of the iris.
– Contraindicated in patients with allergy or sensitivity to latanoprost or other ingredients in the formulation.
– Use with caution if there is active ocular infection or inflammation.
