LYDIA Postpil is a post-coital contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure.
Primary Medical Uses:
– Emergency contraception to reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex.
Drug Class:
– Hormonal emergency contraceptive.
Mechanism of Action:
– Contains levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestogen, which works by preventing or delaying ovulation, inhibiting fertilization, or preventing implantation of a fertilized egg.
Common Forms:
– Oral tablet.
Dosage Instructions:
– Generally taken as a single dose or two doses 12 hours apart, depending on the specific product instructions.
– Should be taken as soon as possible within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected intercourse for maximum effectiveness.
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, headache, breast tenderness, and changes in menstrual bleeding. It is not intended for regular contraceptive use and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
