Montelukast Tab 5mg is a medication used primarily for the management of asthma and allergic rhinitis in pediatric patients.
Primary Uses:
– Prevention and chronic treatment of asthma in children aged 6 months to 14 years.
– Relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis in children aged 2 years and older.
– Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in children aged 6 years and older.
Drug Class:
– Leukotriene receptor antagonist.
Mechanism of Action:
– Montelukast works by blocking leukotrienes, substances in the body that cause airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus production, thereby reducing asthma symptoms and allergic responses.
Common Forms:
– Film-coated tablet, typically 5 mg strength for children.
Dosage Instructions:
– For children aged 6 to 14 years, the usual dose is 5 mg once daily in the evening.
– For younger children, lower doses such as 4 mg chewable tablets or granules are used.
– The tablet should be taken once daily, with or without food.
Side Effects and Cautions:
– Common side effects can include headache, abdominal pain, cough, and fever.
– Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, mood changes, suicidal thoughts, and liver problems.
– Montelukast is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to montelukast or any of its ingredients.
– Patients should be monitored for neuropsychiatric events.
– Not intended for the treatment of acute asthma attacks.
