**Primary Uses:**
– Treatment of acute uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections.
– Prophylaxis against recurrent urinary tract infections.
**Drug Class:**
– Antibiotic.
**Mechanism of Action:**
– Nitrofurantoin, the active ingredient, enters bacteria in the urinary tract and converts into active forms that damage bacterial DNA and other cellular components, inhibiting bacterial growth and survival.
**Common Forms:**
– Oral tablets, typically in 50mg or 100mg dosages.
**Dosage Instructions:**
– **For Treatment of UTIs:**
– Adults: 100mg taken twice daily for 5–7 days.
– **For Prophylaxis:**
– Adults: 50–100mg taken once daily at bedtime.
– It is recommended to take nitrofurantoin with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset.
