Pepto Bismol 354ml is an over-the-counter medication used primarily to treat digestive symptoms such as upset stomach, nausea, heartburn, indigestion, diarrhea, and upset stomach associated with these conditions.
It belongs to the drug class known as antidiarrheals and gastrointestinal protectants.
The active ingredient is bismuth subsalicylate, which works by coating the stomach and intestinal lining, protecting it from acid and irritation, and by reducing inflammation and killing certain bacteria that can cause diarrhea.
Pepto Bismol is commonly available in liquid suspension form for oral use.
The general dosage for adults and children over 12 years is typically 30 ml (about 2 tablespoons) every 30 to 60 minutes as needed, up to a maximum of 8 doses (240 ml) in 24 hours. It should not be used more than 2 days unless directed by a doctor.
Common side effects may include a temporary darkening of the tongue or stool. It is contraindicated in individuals allergic to salicylates (such as aspirin) or those with certain medical conditions, including bleeding disorders. It should be used with caution in children or teenagers recovering from viral infections due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
