Phenobarbitone 60mg tablets are a medication used primarily to prevent and control seizures, including generalized tonic-clonic seizures and partial seizures. Phenobarbitone belongs to the barbiturate class of anticonvulsants.
The medication works by depressing the central nervous system, stabilizing electrical activity in the brain to reduce seizure frequency and severity. It enhances the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter, to slow down brain activity.
Phenobarbitone tablets are taken orally. The dosage varies based on the patient’s age, condition, and response to treatment, with typical adult doses ranging from 30mg to 120mg daily, often divided into one or two doses. For seizure control, the dose is usually adjusted to the minimum effective dose to reduce side effects.
Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, and coordination problems. Long-term use can sometimes cause mood changes, cognitive impairment, or physical dependence. It should be taken under medical supervision, with dosage adjustments made based on clinical response and serum drug levels.
Phenobarbitone is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to barbiturates, severe respiratory disease, porphyria, or severe liver impairment. It may interact with other central nervous system depressants, and sudden withdrawal can lead to withdrawal symptoms, including seizures.
