Pilocarpine 4% Eye Drops are used primarily to treat glaucoma and ocular hypertension by reducing intraocular pressure.
Pilocarpine belongs to the class of drugs known as miotic agents. It works by stimulating the muscarinic receptors in the eye, causing the pupil to constrict and facilitating the drainage of aqueous humor, which lowers the pressure inside the eye.
The eye drops are applied topically to the affected eye(s), typically several times a day as directed by a healthcare provider.
Common side effects include eye redness, blurred vision, headache, eye pain, and difficulty seeing in low light due to pupil constriction.
Pilocarpine is contraindicated in patients with conditions like acute iritis or other inflammatory eye diseases.
