Description
Pirfenidone tablets 200mg are used primarily to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a chronic progressive lung disease characterized by scarring of lung tissue.
Pirfenidone belongs to the class of antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory agents. It works by reducing the production of fibrosis-promoting molecules and inflammatory mediators, thereby slowing the progression of lung scarring.
The tablets are taken orally, usually three times a day with food to improve absorption and minimize stomach upset. Dosage is often initiated at a lower level and gradually increased to the full dose to reduce side effects.
Common side effects include nausea, rash, fatigue, diarrhea, indigestion, and photosensitivity (increased sensitivity to sunlight).
Pirfenidone is contraindicated in patients with severe liver impairment and should be used cautiously in those with liver or kidney disease.
Patients are advised to avoid excessive sun exposure and use sun protection during treatment. Regular monitoring of liver function tests is recommended during therapy.
