Piriton Syrup UK 150ml contains chlorphenamine maleate, an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as hay fever, allergic rhinitis, urticaria (hives), insect bites, and other allergic reactions.
Chlorphenamine works by blocking the effects of histamine, a chemical in the body that causes allergy symptoms.
The syrup form is taken orally, commonly used for children or adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets. Dosage varies by age: for children aged 1 to 6 years, the usual dose is 2.5 ml (half a teaspoon) up to three or four times daily; for children over 6 years and adults, the dose is generally 5 ml (one teaspoon) up to four times daily. Dosage and duration should follow medical advice.
Side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal discomfort.
Piriton Syrup should be used with caution in patients with asthma, glaucoma, prostate problems, or urinary retention. It may cause sedation and can interact with alcohol or other sedative medications.
