Description

Rifampicin capsules are an antibiotic used primarily to treat bacterial infections, especially tuberculosis and certain other infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Primary Medical Uses:
– Treatment of active tuberculosis.
– Treatment and prevention of infections caused by susceptible bacteria such as meningococcal carriers, leprosy, and some staphylococcal infections.
– Often used in combination with other antibiotics to prevent bacterial resistance.

Drug Class or Type:
– Rifamycin class antibiotic.

General Mechanism of Action:
– Rifampicin inhibits bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, blocking RNA synthesis and thereby stopping bacterial protein synthesis and growth.

Common Forms:
– Oral capsules in various doses, commonly 150 mg or 300 mg.

Dosage Instructions:
– Dosage depends on the infection type and patient factors.
– Typical adult dose for tuberculosis is 600 mg daily, often taken with other anti-tubercular drugs.
– Taken orally, usually once daily on an empty stomach for better absorption.
– Dosage and duration should follow medical prescription strictly.

Side Effects, Contraindications, or Interactions:
– Common side effects include orange-red discoloration of urine, sweat, saliva, and tears; gastrointestinal discomfort; rash; and liver enzyme elevation.
– Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to rifampicin.
– Use caution in patients with liver disease.
– Significant drug interactions may occur because rifampicin induces liver enzymes, affecting the metabolism of many drugs including oral contraceptives, anticoagulants, and antiretrovirals.

Rifampicin capsules should be used under medical supervision with adherence to prescribed dosage and monitoring for side effects.
