Description
Roaccutane is a medication used for the treatment of severe forms of acne, such as nodulo-cystic acne, and acne that has not responded to other therapies. It contains isotretinoin, a retinoid that works by reducing the size and activity of sebaceous glands, leading to decreased sebum production and reduced acne lesions.
Roaccutane is available in soft gelatin capsules containing 10 mg or 20 mg of isotretinoin. The typical dosage is 0.5 mg to 1 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, divided into two doses, taken with food. The duration of treatment usually ranges from 16 to 24 weeks, depending on the severity of the acne and the patient’s response to the medication.
Common side effects include dry skin, chapped lips, nosebleeds, and temporary hair thinning. Serious side effects can include elevated liver enzymes, increased blood lipids, and teratogenicity (birth defects if taken during pregnancy). Therefore, Roaccutane is contraindicated in pregnant women and those who may become pregnant during treatment. Regular monitoring of liver function tests and lipid profiles is recommended during therapy.
Roaccutane should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat, and kept out of reach of children.
