Sporanox Capsules 100 mg contain itraconazole, an antifungal medication used to treat various fungal infections.
**Primary Medical Uses:**
– Treatment of onychomycosis (fungal nail infections) in both fingernails and toenails.
– Management of systemic fungal infections such as aspergillosis, candidiasis, and histoplasmosis.
– Treatment of dermatophyte infections like tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), tinea corporis (ringworm), and tinea manuum (hand ringworm).
– Management of pityriasis versicolor (a skin condition caused by yeast).
– Treatment of oropharyngeal and esophageal candidiasis.
**Drug Class:**
– Azole antifungal.
**General Mechanism of Action:**
– Itraconazole inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes, leading to cell death.
**Common Forms:**
– Oral capsules.
**Dosage Instructions:**
– **Onychomycosis (Fingernails):** 200 mg (2 capsules) twice daily for 1 week, followed by a 3-week period without medication. This cycle is repeated for a total of 2 cycles.
– **Onychomycosis (Toenails):** 200 mg (2 capsules) once daily for 12 consecutive weeks.
– **Systemic Fungal Infections:** 100–200 mg once daily; higher doses may be used for severe infections.
– **Dermatophyte Infections:** 100 mg once daily for 15 days.
– **Pityriasis Versicolor:** 200 mg once daily for 7 days.
– **Oropharyngeal Candidiasis:** 200 mg once daily for 1–2 weeks.
– **Esophageal Candidiasis:** 100 mg once daily; doses up to 200 mg/day may be used.
Capsules should be taken with food to enhance absorption.
**Side Effects, Contraindications, or Interactions:**
– **Common Side Effects:** Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, abdominal pain, dizziness, and rash.
– **Serious Side Effects:** Liver toxicity, heart failure, and severe allergic reactions.
– **Contraindications:** Hypersensitivity to itraconazole or any component of the formulation; concurrent use with certain medications such as methadone, disopyramide, dofetilide, dronedarone, quinidine, isavuconazole, ergots, irinotecan, lurasidone, oral midazolam, pimozide, triazolam, felodipine, nisoldipine, ivabradine, ranolazine, eplerenone, cisapride, naloxegol, lomitapide, lovastatin, simvastatin, avanafil, ticagrelor, finerenone, and voclosporin.
– **Use in Pregnancy and Lactation:** Should not be used during pregnancy except for life-threatening cases.
– **Use in Renal and Hepatic Impairment:** Caution is advised in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
