Primary Medical Uses:
– Relief of migraine headaches with or without aura.
– Alleviation of associated symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light, and sound.
Drug Class or Type:
– Triptan (selective serotonin receptor agonist).
General Mechanism of Action:
– Stimulates serotonin (5-HT) receptors in the brain, causing constriction of dilated blood vessels and reducing inflammation.
– This helps to reverse the changes in the brain associated with migraine, thereby relieving headache and related symptoms.
Common Forms:
– Oral tablets, available in 50mg and 100mg strengths.
Dosage Instructions:
– The typical adult dose is 100mg taken orally at the onset of migraine symptoms.
– If symptoms persist, a second dose may be taken at least 2 hours after the first dose.
– Maximum dose per day should not exceed 200mg.
– Not used for migraine prevention, only to treat acute attacks.
Side Effects, Contraindications, or Interactions:
– Possible side effects include dizziness, sensations of tingling, flushing, chest discomfort, and fatigue.
– Contraindicated in individuals with cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, history of stroke, or other serious vascular conditions.
– Should not be used concurrently with certain medications, such as other serotonergic drugs, due to risk of serotonin syndrome.
– Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding; consult healthcare provider.
Sumatriptan 100mg tablets require prescription and should be used under medical supervision.
