Wormplex Syrup is an oral suspension containing 400 mg of albendazole per 10 ml, used to treat various parasitic worm infections. Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic that works by inhibiting glucose uptake in worms, leading to their death. It is effective against both adult and larval stages of intestinal worms, including roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, pinworm, and tapeworm. Additionally, albendazole is used to treat tissue parasites such as neurocysticercosis (brain tapeworm) and hydatid disease.
The recommended dosage for simple worm infections is a single 400 mg dose. For neurocysticercosis, the typical regimen is 400 mg twice daily for 8–30 days, and for hydatid disease, 400 mg twice daily in 28-day cycles, as prescribed by a healthcare provider. It is advisable to take albendazole with food to enhance absorption.
Common side effects may include abdominal pain, nausea, headache, dizziness, and temporary hair loss. Rare side effects can involve elevated liver enzymes and allergic reactions such as rash or itching. Albendazole is not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy and should be used with caution in individuals with liver disease or those requiring long-term use, necessitating regular monitoring. It is not suitable for children under 2 years unless prescribed by a healthcare professional.
