Amoksiklav 457 mg/5 ml Oral Suspension is a combination antibiotic containing amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, used to treat various bacterial infections.
**Drug Class:** Penicillin antibiotic combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor.
**Mechanism of Action:** Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. Clavulanic acid inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria, which can degrade amoxicillin, thereby enhancing the antibiotic’s effectiveness against resistant strains.
**Common Forms:** Oral suspension in 70 ml bottles, reconstituted with water to achieve a final volume of 70 ml.
**Dosage Instructions:** The suspension is reconstituted by adding approximately 63–68 ml of water to the powder, resulting in a final volume of 70 ml. The exact dosage depends on the patient’s weight and the severity of the infection. For children weighing less than 40 kg, the recommended daily dose is 25–45 mg/kg, divided into two doses. For example, a 15 kg child may receive 337.5 mg of amoxicillin per dose, administered twice daily. It’s crucial to follow the prescribing healthcare professional’s instructions.
**Side Effects:** Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and skin rashes. Serious side effects are rare but may include allergic reactions, liver dysfunction, and blood disorders.
**Contraindications and Precautions:** Amoksiklav is contraindicated in patients with a history of jaundice or hepatic dysfunction associated with previous amoxicillin/clavulanic acid therapy. Caution is advised in patients with renal impairment, as dosage adjustments may be necessary.
**Storage:** Store the reconstituted suspension in the refrigerator and use within 7 days. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
Amoksiklav 457 mg/5 ml Oral Suspension is intended to treat bacterial infections effectively. Always follow the prescribed dosage and consult a healthcare professional before starting any new medication regimen.
