Description
Atorvastatin 80mg tablets are a medication used to lower high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood.
They belong to the statin class of drugs, which work by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase in the liver, responsible for cholesterol production.
This results in decreased levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL or “bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides, and an increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL or “good” cholesterol).
Atorvastatin is prescribed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes, and to manage high cholesterol, particularly in patients with risk factors like diabetes or existing heart disease.
The tablets are taken orally, usually once daily, with or without food. The 80mg dose is typically reserved for patients who require significant cholesterol lowering and should be used under medical supervision.
Common side effects include muscle pain, headache, gastrointestinal discomfort, and nausea. Serious but rare effects may include muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and liver damage.
Atorvastatin is contraindicated in active liver disease, pregnancy, and in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
Regular monitoring of liver function and muscle symptoms is recommended during treatment.
Tablets should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
