Description

Montelukast Teva 10 mg is a medication used to manage asthma and allergic rhinitis.

**Primary Uses:**
– Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in adults and pediatric patients aged 6 months and older.
– Relief of daytime and nighttime symptoms of allergic rhinitis in adults and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older.
– Prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older.

**Drug Class:**
– Leukotriene receptor antagonist.

**Mechanism of Action:**
– Montelukast works by blocking leukotrienes, which are chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus production in the airways.

**Common Forms:**
– Film-coated tablets, typically 10 mg strength.
– Chewable tablets in 4 mg and 5 mg strengths.
– Oral granules in 4 mg packets.

**Dosage Instructions:**
– **Adults and Adolescents (15 years and older):** One 10 mg tablet daily in the evening.
– **Children (6 to 14 years):** One 5 mg chewable tablet daily in the evening.
– **Children (2 to 5 years):** One 4 mg chewable tablet or one packet of 4 mg oral granules daily in the evening.
– **Children (6 months to 2 years):** One packet of 4 mg oral granules daily in the evening.

Montelukast should be taken once daily in the evening, with or without food. The oral granules can be given directly in the mouth or mixed with a spoonful of cold or room temperature soft food, such as applesauce. The packet should not be opened until ready to use, and the mixture should be taken within 15 minutes. Do not store any mixture for later use.

Patients should continue taking Montelukast even if their asthma is under control, as well as during periods of worsening asthma. Montelukast should not be used to treat acute asthma attacks; a short-acting inhaled β-agonist should be used for such attacks.

Montelukast is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to montelukast or any of its excipients. Caution is advised when co-administering with inducers of CYP3A4, CYP2C8, and CYP2C9, such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, and rifampicin, as they can reduce the plasma concentration of montelukast. Montelukast may be used during pregnancy and in breastfeeding women only if considered clearly essential. Patients should be advised that montelukast may cause drowsiness or dizziness.

Common side effects include upper respiratory tract infection, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, elevated levels of serum transaminases, rash, and fever. Serious side effects may include thrombocytopenia, hypersensitivity reactions, hallucinations, suicidal thinking and behavior, seizures, hepatitis, angioedema, and erythema multiforme. Patients should seek medical attention if they experience any of these serious side effects.

Montelukast Teva 10 mg is used to manage asthma and allergic rhinitis by inhibiting the action of leukotrienes, thereby reducing inflammation and bronchoconstriction in the airways.
