Quadragel Cream is a topical medication used for the treatment of mouth ulcers. It combines three active ingredients: lidocaine, chlorhexidine gluconate, and metronidazole.
Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that works by blocking pain signals from the nerves to the brain, thereby decreasing pain sensation. Chlorhexidine gluconate is an antiseptic that binds to the surface of teeth, inner cheeks, and gums, killing the infectious microorganisms that cause gum disease, tartar, and other mouth infections. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that kills bacteria and other microorganisms by damaging their DNA.
The cream is typically applied to the affected area in the mouth 2-3 times a day or as directed by a healthcare professional. After application, it is recommended not to wash the mouth or drink any fluid for 30 minutes to allow the medication to take effect.
Common side effects may include application site reactions such as burning, irritation, itching, and redness, as well as dryness in the mouth, metallic taste, nausea, and staining of teeth. These are usually temporary and resolve with time. If they do not improve or worsen, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
