Xalatan eye drops contain the active ingredient latanoprost, which is a prostaglandin analog used primarily to treat elevated intraocular pressure (high pressure inside the eye) in conditions such as open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Latanoprost works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor (fluid) from the eye, thereby reducing intraocular pressure and helping to prevent damage to the optic nerve that can lead to vision loss.
Xalatan is available in liquid eye drop form, typically administered as one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and avoid touching the tip of the dropper to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Common side effects may include eye redness, irritation, itching, dry eyes, and changes in eyelash growth or color. Some patients may also experience a darkening of the iris (colored part of the eye) or the eyelid skin, which can be permanent.
Xalatan should be used under medical supervision, and patients should inform their healthcare provider of any eye infections or allergies before starting treatment.
