XIN-A Suspension contains Ciprofloxacin, which is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics.
The primary medical use of Ciprofloxacin suspension is to treat infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and gastrointestinal infections.
The mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Ciprofloxacin is commonly available in an oral suspension form for easier administration, especially in children or patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Dosage instructions vary depending on the infection type and patient age but generally involve measuring a prescribed amount of suspension (using an appropriate measuring device) two to three times daily. The full course of treatment must be completed to prevent antibiotic resistance.
Possible side effects include nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, headache, and dizziness. Serious side effects can include tendon inflammation or rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects. Ciprofloxacin should be used with caution in patients with a history of tendon disorders or seizures. It may interact with other medications like antacids, calcium supplements, or certain drugs affecting the heart rhythm.
It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics.
