Zopiclone 7.5 mg tablets are a medication primarily used for the short-term treatment of insomnia, particularly when difficulty falling asleep or frequent awakening during the night occurs.
Zopiclone belongs to a class of drugs known as non-benzodiazepine hypnotics. It works by enhancing the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, which produces a sedative effect that helps induce and maintain sleep.
The tablets are taken orally, usually just before bedtime. The typical adult dose is 7.5 mg once daily. Lower doses may be recommended for elderly patients or those with liver or kidney impairment. Treatment duration is generally limited to a few weeks to reduce the risk of dependence and tolerance.
Common side effects can include a bitter or metallic taste, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Less common but serious side effects may include memory problems, confusion, and allergic reactions.
Zopiclone should not be used in patients with severe respiratory problems, sleep apnea, myasthenia gravis, or those with a known hypersensitivity to the drug. Caution is advised when combined with alcohol, other sedatives, or medications that depress the central nervous system.
