Xigduo XR (Dapagliflozin/Metformin) 10/1000 is a combination medication used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains 10 mg of dapagliflozin and 1000 mg of metformin in an extended-release tablet form.
Dapagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor that lowers blood glucose by preventing glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, promoting glucose excretion through urine. Metformin is a biguanide that reduces glucose production in the liver and increases insulin sensitivity.
Xigduo XR is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, typically alongside diet and exercise.
It is taken orally once daily with food to minimize gastrointestinal side effects.
Dosage should be prescribed by a healthcare professional, and patients are advised to follow the prescribed regimen strictly. The medication must not be split, crushed, or chewed due to its extended-release formulation.
Common side effects include urinary tract infections, genital infections, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and increased urination. Serious side effects may include lactic acidosis, ketoacidosis, dehydration, or kidney problems. It is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney impairment, metabolic acidosis, or known hypersensitivity to dapagliflozin or metformin.
